Stories of Lakeside
Mdm Tan’s story is one of resilience, adaptability, and the power of community. Her life bears witness to the rapid social changes throughout the decades. Life as she knew it was upended when she moved from a kampong to a HDB flat. Mdm Tan recalls the initial loneliness, the strange quiet of “You close your door, I close mine,” and the sleepless nights adjusting to city noise. But with time, she adapted. Then, tragedy struck when she lost her beloved eldest son to the SARS outbreak. He contracted the virus and passed on that very same day – A devastating loss that is painful to think about, so she prefers not to dwell on the memory. Still, she pressed on despite the grief.
Mdm Tan shared that she also worked at a fishball factory until it moved to Indonesia. Once again, she adapted, cleaning housing estates for $3 per hour. Upon retiring, loneliness crept in. She said, “I was always at home, feeling bored and down.” Thankfully, a thoughtful friend brought her to Kaki Kampong Seniors Wellness (KKSW), where she has been a familiar and cheerful presence for the past 10 years.
She actively participates in arts and crafts, outings, and enjoys karaoke at our weekly Happy Hour sessions. She is appreciative of the community she’s built here. “I’m very contented. I feel happy I can join activities, and I’m always thankful to all of you for keeping me company,” she tells us with a warm smile.
It was also heartwarming to learn that Mdm Tan forged a friendship with fellow senior Mdm Yeo, simply by noticing her walking from the bus stop and deciding to walk with her. Her advice to other seniors? “Stay active. Join activities. Make friends and chat. It keeps your mind alert!”
For Mdm Tan who had lost her kampong home so many years ago, finding the kampong spirit again at KKSW is an incredibly precious and joyful discovery. Presently, KKSW provides a supportive environment and meaningful connections for 300 seniors like Mdm Tan. With your help, we can sustain the good work at KKSW and help seniors take small steps towards big kampong dreams. Donate now: https://lakeside.org.sg/support-us/small-steps-big-dreams/
