Stories of Lakeside

Lenny

Lenny

Imagine being a mother of 10, separated from your children, rebuilding your life after prison. Lenny has faced challenges that would break most people. Her past marriage was a violent one, with her ex-husband leaving scars all over her face and body. To escape her problems, she turned to meth. But within her, a spark of hope remained.

That’s when Lenny met her Lakeside counsellor, Janice, who journeyed with her for a year. Their bond grew stronger as they overcame obstacles together. When Lenny went back to prison, Janice never wavered. Instead, she visited Lenny month after month so she could keep hope alive and remind her that she was not alone.

Janice’s support extended beyond those concrete walls. When Lenny’s son dreamed of joining his school’s football programme in Germany, it seemed impossible. Janice stepped in, navigating the complex process of securing the young boy’s passport to keep his dreams alive. Her team also organised an outing to Gardens by the Bay for ex-inmates and their families, which was a day full of joy for Lenny and her children.

Through it all, Lenny fought to overcome her dependence on meth and manage her mental health without medication. She reconnected with her children, letting her love for them fuel her determination. These days, Lenny is excelling at work and was recently named Best Employee of 2024 by her company!

Lenny said, “Things were overwhelming at first. I would overthink and I wasn’t sure if I could make it through. But I put up a positive mindset and pulled through with help and guidance. In the past, I had low self-esteem but now I don’t bother with people’s judgment or put limits on my abilities.

Janice was always there when I needed help or a listening ear. When I had so much to complain, her support was beyond limits. It made a difference because it was the first time a stranger had really shown care and concern for me.”
