I had dreams and aspirations but things didn’t go the way I planned. I became addicted to drugs and was detained for drug consumption in 2021. After two years in prison, I was placed on the Day Release Scheme (DRS) with Lakeside Family Services (Lakeside), which gave me the opportunity to reintegrate into the community gradually through a step-down approach. 

I meet with my Lakeside counsellor regularly and we talk about life’s issues and the challenges close to my heart. I’m blessed to have a counsellor who is never judgmental and listens to my woes. We work on budgeting and the arrangements pertaining to work, family, and childcare. I now have a better idea of how to put my life in order again and focus on the things that will keep the drugs away. 

Having a counsellor walk with me has helped me greatly, especially as I feel the harsh glares of people who know about my past when I’m trying to press on towards my new life and goals. Starting afresh was never going to be smooth sailing, but with the constant encouragement from my counsellor, I am where I am today. I feel blessed to be able to see my kids and mom when I come home from work every day.” It takes tremendous strength to heal from intergenerational trauma.
